Coal Applications

KSD Enterprises designs, manufactures, and supports the American standard, self fueled, Methane Exhauster.  KSD Methane Exhausters are used to remove methane from underground mines, most often from GOB areas of longwall panels.  KSD Methane Exhausters can also remove methane from sealed areas of mines, and from abandoned mines.

The major benefits provided by the KSD Methane Exhauster include:

INCREASED SAFETY FOR MINERS – Anytime methane can be removed from active areas of a mine, the risk of a methane fueled accident is lessened.

INCREASED PRODUCTION – When methane concentrations exceed certain limits, production must stop to ensure safety for the miner and the mine.  KSD Methane Exhausters are commonly used to remove methane from the mine to prevent the excessive methane concentrations that lead to these interruptions in production.  Less downtime means more uptime, which means more production.

GOB GAS FUEL – This previously wasted energy can heat air shafts, displace purchased fuel in preparation plants, heat driveways, etc.

POTENTIAL INCOME STREAM FROM WASTED METHANE ENERGY – in some instances, carbon credits gained from the destruction of methane can provide additional income streams.

The primary function of the Methane Exhauster is to remove methane from “gob vent” bore holes as longwall panels advance.  Methane is liberated by mining of the coal seam, and from areas of fragmentation of the overlying strata and the mine floor.  The Methane Exhauster can also be used to evacuate reservoirs, degas sealed areas, and abandoned mines as well.

Functionally, KSD Enterprise’s Methane Exhausters consist of an internal combustion engine modified to start running from a propane source.  Within a couple minutes after starting, and methane evacuation begins, the fuel for the Methane Exhauster engine is transferred to the low quality fuel coming from the gob vent and the propane is shut off.

KSD Methane Exhausters are available in a variety of configurations to fulfill the needs of our customer.  The design begins with the customer specifying performance requirements including flow rate, pressure differentials, and gas composition.
